| The
"Wow!" factor
Goddag dear readers and welcome
to yet another edition of XT.
A buzzword you often hear
these days is the "Wow!" factor. Sales people spend considerable time and
money on discovering products that elicit the "Wow!" from consumers.
Their job has become almost
impossible as our world becomes saturated with scientific discoveries and
movies that take "Wow!" beyond a mere single word. Consumers are so spoiled
these days that mere "miracles" before their eyes elicit no more than tired
yawns and questions like "is that all? .."
My mother was a teenager
when the first radio was delivered to her parents home. Until then her
father had tuned into the only news broadcast via a crystal set. "This
is so wonderful, I never imagined that this would be possible!" she said
when she saw color television for the first time, over 30 years ago.
So many things today are
taken for granted that people's values in Western society have become distorted.
It reminds me of the 6 year old, who, upon opening a birthday gift, discovers
an article of clothing, immediately hands it to his mother with the disappointed
words "its laundry .."
At the same time, children
of a similar age can be seen running naked somewhere in Africa, pushing
home-made toys that they've fashioned from an empty tin can and a piece
of wire. The contrast in values, needs and appreciation of things makes
you think. "What lies beyond this human failure to be satisfied with
anything they are given?" Perhaps the key words here, were overlooked?
"Home-made" - the fruit of
one's own labor must surely bring satisfaction. I've seen the enthusiasm
displayed by youngsters,
who were otherwise 'bored out of their brains', when they were shown how
to build their own simple radio.
Creativity instills a sense
of pride, a feeling that we do have some control over our surroundings,
the feeling that we as individuals can make a difference instead of just
being spectators. Remember that 'creative' is the opposite to 'destructive'.
Encourage everyone to be
creative and don't forget to say "Wow!" when you see what they've created.
I'm sure you'll get a positive
response.
Farvel until next month.

Month's Country |
| Denmark
The Little Mermaid
With little to get angry
about in Scandinavia's cosiest community, post-Viking Danes have had to
file down their horns and make their mark in more civilised fashion. The
Danes have responded by inventing Lego toys, being the European Union's
cagiest member, and producing some talented upstart soccer players. Brand
recognition persists due to the Danes baking pastries so delicious that
the addiction of the entire gap-toothed world is assured.
Denmark's capital, the toe-tapping
toy-town of Copenhagen, is an urban mosh pit of the most fragrant persuasion.
Its flannels are always laundered, its grunge never more lank than just
the other side of swank, and its Jensens, Hansens and Nielsens are a cacophony
of excuse-me's as they elbow their way to the bouncer-line. And given all
the fun that there is to be had in this festival-happy scattering of islands,
Denmark's status as the least bank-breaking country in Scandinavia deserves
glad-handed shake me happy thank you letters from travellers all the way

Game
of the Month |
| Charlie
the Duck

Charlie the Duck is a side-scrolling
platform game that will immediately remind you of games like Super Mario
Brothers. Well, it reminds you of those games except for the fact that
you're a duck. But this really goes along with the cuteness of the game,
and it doesn't take away from the fun. The bottom line is that if
you like side-scrolling games like Super Mario Brothers, you'll like Charlie
the Duck.

| Scam
Alert |
| I was surprised and sickened
today to receive a chatty email from some folks that are so thick- skinned,
they continue to use the same names they had 4 years ago! My memory is
not that good, but when it comes to scams, my memory is good as any elephant's.
Maybe their dollars finally ran out down in the Bahamas. They obviously
didn't keep accurate records of whom they scammed.
Donn and Jeannie are back!
donnjeannie@amazingfatburner.com
They had a big scam going
a few years ago called "Millionaire Island" somehow related to a firm called
i-bid.com. Anyway to cut a long story short, I fell for their pitch
and approved a credit card debit of about $180 to join up. A month later
my statement showed a debit of $2000.! Their amazing-fat-burner scam
promises to burn anybody that goes near it!

| Bridge
Links Sweden and Denmark |
| The Oresund Bridge
Copenhagen in background
The Oresund Bridge, opened
on 1 July 2000, links the Danish capital Copenhagen and the Swedish city
of Malmo.
Also called the Oresund Fixed
Link, it replaces the car and train ferries that shuttled backwards and
forwards across the Oresund Channel between Denmark and Sweden, with a
16 km long combined bridge and tunnel, a 4 lane toll motorway and a dual
track railway.
This was the last major water
barrier in Europe to be crossed by bridge after the opening in 1998 of
the
15 km long Storebelt Fixed
Link (also a bridge and tunnel) between the Danish islands of Fyn with
its main city Odense and Zealand where Copenhagen is located.
Now it is possible to drive
from southern Portugal to the Arctic Circle, or travel by train from northern
Scotland through the Channel Tunnel, across Europe and around the Gulf
of Bothnia to Helsinki, capital of Finland.
From Copenhagen, there are
three main sections to the Oresund Fixed Link, a 4 km two level tunnel
through relatively shallow water, a 4 km long island built from stone,
where the position of every stone has been checked by satellite technology,
the 8 km Oresund Bridge, the world's strongest cable suspension bridge
with a motorway on the top deck above the railway, across the deep water
of the Oresund channel to Malmo in Sweden.
After nine years planning
and construction, at a cost of US$2 billion, the bridge carries up to 11,800
cars and trucks a day, specially designed electric trains, which at either
end can pass without stopping between two different rail gauges and voltages
of electric current.
As well as being a great
example of technology and engineering, the Oresund Bridge changes the geography
of Europe by providing a fixed road and rail link between Scandinavia and
Europe, and opens new possibilities for trade, tourism, industry and culture.

| Thought
provoking words |
| Life is like a box of
chocolates

"Life is like a box of chocolates...a
cheap, thought- less perfunctory gift that nobody ever asks for. Unreturnable,
because all you get back is another box of chocolates. You're stuck with
this undefinable whipped-mint crap that you mindlessly wolf down when there's
nothing else left to eat.
Sure, once in a while, there's
a peanut butter cup,
or an English toffee. But
they're gone too fast, and the taste is fleeting. So you end up with broken
bits, filled with hardened jelly and teeth-shattering nuts, and if you're
desperate enough to eat those, all you've got left is a...is an empty box...filled
with useless, brown paper wrappers".
- from 'Musings of
a Cigarette-Smoking Man,'
The X-Files
PS. I hope this won't affect
your subscription to XT !
In the context unreturnable
(sic) seems almost appropriate. (editor)
